Question

Do you think technology and shows like American Canadian Idol have a negative affect on the music industry?

Answer

Technology and the Idol programs have very different impacts. Idol, I dismiss because it is a different form of entertainment, appealing to a different audience than the rest of the industry. People do not tune into Idol for the music.brbrHowever technology has changed things and is changing things radically. Most music companies just dont get it since they are using to playing gatekeepers. The technology has left them reeling and not understanding that they are dealing with.brbrThe first item is one of my pet peeves. Music companies are still thinking in terms of LPs and s, let alone EPs and CDs or even DVDs for that matter.brbrThey are pressuring artists to put out quotalbumsquot in increasingly shorter timeframes, except if you have the clout with the label to negotiate fewer releases in the contract. This forces artists to rush the creative process where they are forced to rehash the same old stuff over and over again for the term of the contract without the time to generate quality material.brbrIf they truly got the impact of the new technology they would see that now, since you can download track by track, each individual tune sells itself by its inherent qualities. Hype for bands is becoming less effective in selling and people are getting tired of the same old playlists from radio and internet radio that is forced down the throats of listeners by record companies. They are still called quotrecord companiesquot implying the rpm vinyl disk mentality , btw.brbrThe user has more choice now and will choose what they like when they like it. That means people can choose across music gendres, pick individual songs off quotLPsquot and leave the rest of the quotjunkquot or quotfillerquot alone, sample without standing around in record stores, create mood lists and much more quickly spread the word about a new musical quotfindquot.brbrEmbrace the chaos! Long live good music!
